It genuinely felt like a good service to offer fellow gamers and collectors. We truly loved restoring discs—whether it was a rare gem like Rule of Rose or someone’s childhood copy of Muppets Party Cruise, we were all in.
Even when the cost of consumables went up, we kept our prices the same. We had the equipment to hand, and it doesn't take all that much time to do, so we didn't need to earn boatloads of cash from it. Most importantly, our awesome customers appreciated it.
We even backed it with a guarantee: if your disc didn’t work after resurfacing, we’d refund you. We thought that was fair enough. In hindsight, though...it was naïve.
Unfortunately, someone must’ve clocked just how naïve and sent up a flare to the car-booters and reseller crowd. From processing five to ten discs per week for happy customers, we spent our 2025 Easter Bank Holiday weekend processing hundreds of wrecked copies of the likes of SingStar, Just Dance, and FIFA 2003.
We gave every disc our full attention, running expensive multi-pass processes on some of the worst-condition discs we’d ever seen. Despite that, we hit a 100% success rate. Every single disc was tested on our purposefully old and under-maintained test consoles. We keep them that way, since our thinking is that if a disc works on those, it'll work anywhere!
And work they did. All booted first time. No skips. No jumps. Flawless.
Yet somehow, discs were suddenly failing right and left when they got back to the customer. No, they didn’t want to prove it in any way. No, they didn’t want to send them back for retesting. They just wanted their money back because of...oh, right...the guarantee. A few hundred quid in refunds later - plus a few hundred more for the consumables we used to repair the discs - we decided to wrap it up.
For the record, we never had that problem with a genuine gamer or collector. Not once. We've never had a query about the quality of the work or even the remotest hint of a failed repair. In all honesty, we forgot that the guarantee was even a thing, because nobody had ever used it. But here we are.
To bring the service back, we’d need to charge significantly more, cap how many discs someone can send, and remove the guarantee altogether. And honestly, that’s probably not what most people are looking for.
So, that’s where we’re at. We tried to do something decent for the gaming community and, yeah...the usual thing happened. Sorry!
